Temple Mourns the Passing of Dr. Athole Jacobi

Temple University mourns the loss of Dr. Athole Jacobi, a longtime fan, benefactor and friend of Temple Athletics and Temple University. She passed away on March 25 at the age of 91.

Temple University is extremely saddened by the loss of Dr. Athole Jacobi,” said Vice President and Director of Athletics Arthur Johnson. “In my short time at Temple, I quickly learned that Dr. Jacobi was a wonderful person who truly cared about people, especially our student-athletes. She touched many lives through her kindness and generosity. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time.”

Dr. Jacobi was fully immersed in the success of the Cherry and White, serving as a Legends Society Board Member, an Owl Club Board Member, a member of The Crew Nine, and a season ticket holder for both football and basketball for over 25 years .

Aside from his involvement on multiple boards, Dr. Jacobi was an extremely generous benefactor of the program, donating to Temple Athletics as a whole, and individual varsity sport programs. Her largest contribution from her served the Owl Club Annual Fund, where she donated $255k.

Dr. Jacobi, who was an avid rower while attending University of Edinburgh in Scotland was one of the largest supporters of the men’s and women’s crew and rowing teams, donating a combined $93k between the two, with $65k serving the men’s program and $28 k allocated to the women. Her contributions from Ella did not stop there, as she donated $26k to the football team and $15k to men’s basketball. Her donation from Ella to men’s basketball continued as she gave a $10k donation to the men’s basketball practice facility. Lastly, she generously donated $10k to sports banquets.

Aside from her contributions to Temple, Dr. Jacobi’s contributions to the medical field in the Greater Philadelphia Area and internationally are unmatched. At the Medical College of Pennsylvania, she served as the Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology (1972-1989), the Medical Director of Acute Care Laboratory (1972-1991), Co-Director of the Graduate Program of Nurse Anesthesia (1981-1991 ), and a professor at the Graduate School of Medical Sciences (1982-1993). On an international level, Dr. Jacobi served the Royal College of Surgeons in England as a Fellow of the Faculty of Anesthetists.

In addition, she was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Pennsylvania Society of Anesthesiologists, the Philadelphia Society of Anesthesiologists, and the Philadelphia County Medical Society. She also served as the Chairman of the Society of Academic Anesthesia from 1998-1992.

A gathering of friends of Dr. Jacobi will take place on Thursday, April 14, 2022, between the hours of 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM at the Vincent Gangemi Funeral Home, Inc., 2238 S. Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19145.
