Wheeling, W. Va. – The Wheeling University Track & Field team’s outdoor season has been a strong one so far with several Cardinals setting PRs in their events throughout the first two full events of the season. However, the team will split up for two different events this week as they continue to prepare for the 2022 Mountain East Conference (MEC) Championships in May. The multi-event athletes will kick things off when they head to Mondschein Multi Event in Kutztown, Pennsylvania.
The Cardinals will be sending three athletes with Desi James and Julius Hobbs competing in the Men’s Decathlon and Liz Salas competing in the Women’s Heptahlon at the event. For the multis, it is their second individual event of the summer with their last outing coming in the Brandi Bowen Invitational hosted by Glenville State. The Cardinals also had three competitors in that outing with Hobbs and Salas each competing in that event.
Salas was one of two Cardinal women to compete at the event, finishing fifth in the Heptathlon with 2374 points on the day. Salas’s top event in the Pentathlon was the shot put, where she placed second with a distance of 9.21 meters. She specialized in the shot put during the indoor season and continues to shine at the event. However, she also came through with her best 800-meter time of the season in that event, 3:26.61, and earned her second silver medal of the day in the event. Overall, it was a strong day for Salas and she looks to continue her progression in her eight events.
Hobbs was also in action for the first Decathlon of the outdoor season, placing fourth overall with 3459 points across the 10 events. When he hasn’t been competing in the decathlon, Hobbs has been one of the top Men’s Pole Vaulters for Wheeling this season. That was the event he had the most success in, winning the event with a height of 2.10 meters. He then showed off his chops in the distance events, running in the 1500 meter and winning the event with a time of 5:16.84. He entered the second day of that event sitting sixth in the standings, but the two wins were enough to lift him to fourth when all was said and done.
The multi-events have not yet been given the chance to run at either the Bethany College Invitational or the IUP Ed Fry Invitational in either of the last two weeks. These separate events give them a chance to focus on their pacing and allows them to focus on events that they normally wouldn’t focus on during meets. Both the Heptathlon and the Decathlon will be run at the 2022 MEC Outdoor Championships and the Cardinals mutli event performers will prepare to represent their team.
The Mondschein Multi will be hosted by Kutztown University on Wednesday, April 13th, and Thursday, April 14th, at the Andre Reed Stadium. Both the Heptathlon and the Decathlon will span both days with half the events happening on day one, followed by the second half on day two. All three Cardinal athletes will be in action on both days with the event beginning at 1 PM.
The Mondschein Multi kicks off day one from Kutztown University with the first events beginning at 1 PM. Stay tuned to wucardinals.com for full coverage of both day’s events.
