214 Spiders Earn Spot On Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond placed 214 student-athletes on the Atlantic 10 Conference 2021-22 Commissioner’s Honor Roll, which recognizes excellence in the classroom in sports sponsored by the conference.

Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, this is the fifth consecutive year the Commissioner’s Honor Roll has been based on the entire academic year. Previously the award was granted following each semester. To be selected for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award.

Spider women’s lacrosse and soccer led the way 31 student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll each. Women’s cross country / track was third with 27 student-athletes honored while baseball was the top male program with 24. Swimming and diving was fifth with 22 honored followed by field hockey (18), women’s basketball (15), men’s cross country (12 ), men’s basketball (12), men’s golf (8), women’s tennis (8) and men’s tennis (8).

There were 281 student-athletes conference-wide that achieved a 4.0 GPA in 2021-22, representing eight percent of the total number of honorees and nearly two-thirds (an impressive 64.7 percent) of the honorees, equaling 2,299 student-athletes, recorded a 3.5 GPA or better.

On the eve of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX, it’s notable that 65 percent of the A-10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll honorees are female student-athletes. Title IX greatly expanded the opportunities for women in higher education, including participation in collegiate sports and access to fields of study.

Designed to recognize excellence in the classroom, a student-athlete in an Atlantic 10-sponsored sport must have a combined fall and spring semester grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the academic year to be selected for the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Both freshmen and graduate students are eligible to receive the award. In each of the last five years, the league honored over 3,000 student-athletes, and in the last three years, the total has topped 3,500.

The top three women’s sports across the conference were women’s cross country / track & field with 447 honorees, women’s soccer (351 honorees) and rowing (316 honorees). The top three men’s sports conference-wide are men’s cross county / track & field (341 honorees), baseball (281 honorees) and men’s soccer (259 honorees).

The Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll only includes Richmond student-athletes from A-10 sponsored sports so no members from football (CAA), men’s lacrosse (SoCon) or women’s golf (Patriot League) are eligible. Women’s lacrosse / field hockey student-athlete Lindsey Frank and soccer / track student-athlete Taylor Coleman were counted once in the total number of student-athletes honored but individually counted with each program.
